West Coast Waterfront Labor Disputes

By: Heather Gladwill

As some of you may know, there is a labor dispute going on at the various West Coast Ports. The longshoremen are attempting to get a better contract, but, sadly, they are failing. The ports have recently begun shutting down work on the weekends and do not allow workers to work overtime. Even now, many ports are either debating shutting down or have already done so. This shutting down is only temporary, but will definitely cause a loss of money unless the dispute is resolved. This labor dispute has caused dockworkers to slow down their working pace, which leads to congestion in the work area and slower delivery times. Goods that used to take only a few days to ship now take a week or more.

This major issue affects many different jobs and industries worldwide that rely on the ports to ship and receive goods. Due to this dispute, thousands of jobs worldwide are affected. These ports normally are handling over $1 trillion worth of goods annually, but due to the multiple shut downs, this number will most likely drop severely. Most everything from Asia made for U.S. Consumers comes in through these ports, so the shutting down will cut off supplies to a mass amount of stores and outlets.

While the two sides of this dispute are trying to reach an agreement, the pressure that is placed upon this whole situation does not help make the situation any better. In fact, it makes it ten times harder to bargain! While some of the bigger problems have been settled (like healthcare), there are still various other problems that must be taken care of in order for this entire dispute to subside. If the two sides cannot reach a good bargain soon, so many problems will arise in the U.S. Hopefully the ports will find a way to end this and resume work as it should be.

Eavesdropping TVs

By: Davis Banksimg_0113-6091d

According to Samsung, “Samsung TV’s have never been this smart,” but there’s a possibility that this isn’t entirely true. In Samsung’s Terms and Conditions, it states, “Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of Voice Recognition.” Samsung responded to this, saying that they’re only distributing the information to third party services because they need them to convert it from speech to text.

Many people are concerned about this, but a few are saying things such as, “Samsung can help you, but sometimes it needs to deliver the information to third parties to get the job done.” One person even said to disconnect your TV from your WiFi, then it won’t be a SmartTV but a DumbTV. A few people are being negative and saying that they are selling the audio recorded, but Samsung keeps assuring that they are not. Thankfully, no damage has occurred to the users of the TVs. Be careful about how you talk about around your TV, as there’s a small possibility of damage occurring.

Jog, Jog, Jog-a-thon! Jog, Jog, Jog-a-thon!

Yes kids, it’s that wonderful time of the year again where we raise money for scholarships! The rules of jogathon are simple: you get people to donate money to you every time you complete a lap. The donators will have to fill out a short form though, which not only gets your class points for a donut party, but a chance to win individual prizes, as well! Every year there are plenty of new, amazing prizes such as Starbucks gift cards, money, RCS merchandise, OR, the grand prize… A $50 Target gift card! As of now, there are currently 327 forms that have been turned in! Many students described Jog-A-Thon as a great, healthy, energetic way to raise money for people, while keeping it classy and fun! There has also been a money jump, a free homework pass, and an amazing RCS sweater given to selected people throughout the week. So remember kids, if you want some enjoyable prizes, turn in some forms and support your school!

The Great MacBook Swindle

by Jessica Brock

Funny has it that a British man ordered a laptop on Ebay, only to find that when it came, he only got the picture of it.

Not a color copy.

A black and white copy.

Aside from that. Wouldn’t you be unhappy with eBay members for pulling pranks like that? Fortunately, he had a great attitude about this whole situation. He said, “Why bother sending a picture in a box? It doesn’t make any sense. I almost had to laugh.” Having a sense of humor in times of stress is a really good thing. Keeping a cool head in times of discouragement helps alleviate the stress of falling upon bad times.

He was an honest man, trying to DJ for a wedding, and needed technological equipment. He had only been a member of Ebay for a couple years, and had never experienced anything like this before. It wasn’t his fault, nor was it the fault of Ebay. The fault lies in whomever pulled that silly prank on this gentleman. People these days have gotten more crude, dishonest, and disrespectful.

In movies and television, the children are always rebelling against authority, or back-talking to their parents, instead of submitting, and doing what God tells us to do. Our Christian calling is to honor our Father and our Mother, and to respect our elders. Children also have been talking disrespectfully about their peers, and teachers. They gossip, and brainlessly joke about teachers. People say that we, as humans, are basically good, and are better off than where we were thirty years ago. But from my conclusions, people seem to have gotten worse over the years, because of what the world seems to be “cool” at the moment, like pranking someone for money. What has happened to the “One nation, under God?”

Helping the Poor

By: Makalya Massone

A survey was given to junior high school students at Nathan Hale high school in West Allis, Wisconsin about the broad spectrum of political parties. For example, in one particular situation a student was graded down because he categorized “We should not help the poor, it’s a waste of money” into Fascist instead of Conservative/Republican which is  what the teacher perceived to be the correct answer. The student’s perception of this statement was true to his beliefs. The Bible teaches us time and time again to help our brethren in need. Jesus was always healing and giving of himself to the poor and people in need. I am not sure that this type of character falls into any political spectrum but its the character that God calls us to.

Soccer Team Again

By: Aidan Fosdahl

I have interviewed Noah Weatherbie about the soccer team. I asked him if the team will have a good year this year. He answered yes, but there may be some ups and downs in the team and its players, but it will be a good year.

I asked him about any certain players that might make the difference and he said there was one player that might make the difference. Paul Romero from last year was one of the players that really carried the team and the difference will be great.

I asked him another question about the coach. He thinks the coach is a good discipling coach and has great morals.

Soccer, Futbol, whatever you call it; here is what you have to look out for in the trading market. Big surprise, Manchester United from the Premier League is offering 90 MILLION pounds to buy Gareth Bale from Real Madrid from Liga BBVA. I honestly think that Real Madrid would not accept this offer because this would cancel out the amazing chemistry of (in my opinion), the second best combination of forwards, following FC Barcelona’s Neymar, Suarez, and Mr. Lionel Messi. But this trade would mess everything up with Real Madrid’s three forwards Bale, Ronaldo, and Benzema which with their 18 and 4 record. That would also make Manchester United a very overpowered team. They already have Falcao, Di Maria, Rooney, Van Persie, and their goalkeeper De Gea. What will happen? Will Real Madrid take the offer and gain 90 million pounds?

The next top story is about Ronaldo. The Real Madrid President Florentino Perez is willing to sell his star player Cristiano Ronaldo for a mega transfer fee. Ronaldo is linked to going back to his former side Manchester United for getting a lot of hate about his performance on Saturday the 7th this month and
losing 4-0 to Atletico Madrid. Will Bale go to Manchester United and make them an unstoppable team? Will Ronaldo go with bale to Manchester United and just wipe away the competition? Will Ronaldo get better at soccer and not lose to Atletico Madrid 4-0 again? What will happen ladies and gentlemen, what will happen?.

The last story is really just a disappointing topic. People have been spreading rumors that Mr. Lionel Messi has been wanting to transfer to another team like Chelsea. But those are all lies. Mr. Lionel Messi came out and said that he will not be going anywhere any time soon. That statement was a relief to all FC Barcelona fans because they would just be devastated. This whole rumor started when Mr. Lionel Messi got into an argument with his manager Luis Enrique. But that is all a rumor, have a nice day Happy Valentines Day

By: Danny B

Last week I went to go see the spongebob movie. The movie is about how someone steals the krabby patty formula. Spongebob goes back in time to get the formula but he looses it again. A pirate stole it and started a food truck on the surface. Spongebob and his friends fight the pirate and end up reasoning.

I have my pros and cons about the movie. My first pro is that the special effects were cool. My con is that the superpowers were bad, unless eating unlimited ice cream is awesome. My final pro is that time travel was nice because the machine is a photo booth. The second con on my list is that the beginning of the movie was confusing. These are my pros and cons about the SpongeBob Movie.
