Jesus is God? (Jesus in Other Religions)

By America Lopez, Talon Co-editor

We know Jesus as our Lord and savior, but how do people of other religions see Him?

Judaism is perhaps the religion that most differs from Christianity in its view of Jesus. The Torah is the main sacred text that Jewish people turn to for guidance. Jesus is often viewed as one of many false messiahs, and the most damaging at that. They believe that worshiping “one person as a form of idolatry, since the central belief of Judaism is the absolute unity and singularity of God.””In Judaism, the idea of God as a duality or trinity is heretical — it is even considered by some polytheistic.”

There are many misconceptions about the Islamic faith and although there are many differences between the Christian faith and Islam, there are similarities, as well. The Quaran is the sacred book that Islamists believe to be the word of God as given to Muhammad. The angel Gabriel assisted him in this. Now, of course, I’m not claiming to be an expert on the Islamist faith, but I’m just trying to share what I know at this current moment. “Muslims revere Jesus and believe in him as a prophet, using the Qur’an (not the Bible) as a reliable record of knowledge about Jesus.” Given this, Islamists do not believe Jesus is the son of God. Islamists do not believe in Jesus as a redeemer and saviour, since they do not believe in the original sin and since they do believe in God’s grace, guidance (in the form of prophetic revelation–the Word of God), and human effort are sufficient for redemption and salvation. The thing that was the most interesting to me was that Islamist asserts that it only seemed like Jesus was crucified, and that “God miraculously took him up to God, Himself.” This view is different from the Christian view seeing that we don’t believe that good work alone can justify out salvation.

Christianity relies on The Bible, and the Bible alone. We believe in The Trinity: God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are all one. We don’t think that we can be saved by good works, alone, but we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, and, “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9). It’s really that simple. Believe and confess and live your life in a way that is pleasing to The Lord and will bring Him glory.

While it’s interesting to learn about other religions, remember our God is the true and almighty Creator.
