New Beginnings

By: Katie Calonje, Talon Staff Writer

Next week spring is starting on March 20th. One of the ways that we know spring is coming is through looking at the sky which is called the Vernal Equinox. For many of us when we think of spring, we think of new beginnings. It’s a time to start again and begin new things such as projects. People even associate spring with spring cleaning and to throw out the old things and in with the new. Nature is also a part of the new beginnings process because the flowers begin to bloom and animals start coming out of their hibernation to start living again outside of their nests and homes from the cold winter.  Spring is the time to begin again and to renew and restore yourself and the Vernal Equinox is one of the ways that tells us why.

The Vernal Equinox is an astronomical event that happens around the sun in Earth’s orbit and in the imaginary dome of our sky simultaneously. The imaginary celestial equator is an enormous circle that divides the sky into Northern and South Hemispheres. At the equinox, the sun crosses the celestial equator, to enter the sky’s Northern Hemisphere. Also at the equinox, Earth’s two hemispheres are receiving the sun’s rays equally. Night and day are approximately equal in length. The word equinox comes from the Latin and means equal and night.

We have an equinox twice a year, during spring and fall, when the tilt of the Earth’s axis and Earth’s orbit around the sun combine in a way that the axis is not leaning away from it and not towards the sun. The equinox signifies that spring is finally here and a time for renewal.

Its about to be a new season because of the Vernal Equinox and we should try to make it one of the best seasons since its a time to try different things and change and to renew ourselves. We should take more actions in our lives around this time. You can wait for opportunities and good things to happen to you or you can go and get them. Chasing your dreams can help you go farther in life rather than waiting for them to come to you. Go try new things and believe that you can do whatever you set your mind to.

Even when we pray for God to help us we need to meet God half way and take action and spring is a more well-known time for that. In John 3:16 it says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Every day is a chance to begin again and God can help us through it because he loves us. We shouldn’t be afraid to start new things and to start new beginnings.
